Just north of Charm City lie Baltimore and Harford counties, with several of the Free State’s outstanding golf courses that stretch across bold hills to the Chesapeake Bay.
Baltimore County is the third largest county in the state and home to multiple universities including the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Towson University; Goucher College; and Stevenson University. The community of Towson has a vibrant shopping and entertainment area nestled in its small-town atmosphere.
A couple miles to the north in Timonium, you will find Fox Hollow Golf Course and Learning Center. This 18-hole layout and complete practice facility is rare in that it is located within a residential area yet is void of housing. The cornerstone of Baltimore County golf may just be Greystone Golf Course in Whitehall near the Mason-Dixon line. This outstanding Joe Lee designed layout has dramatic elevation changes and a mix of hardwoods and wetlands. The course offers a rare five par 3s and five par 5s creating a fun and different Par 72 adventure. Rocky Point Golf Course is located in the easternmost portion of the county on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Stunning water views and mature tree-lined fairways are just some of the characteristics to one of Maryland’s best kept golf secrets.
The western side of the county has two courses that share the same clubhouse in Windsor Mill. Diamond Ridge has been a long-time favorite designed by Ed Ault. The front and back nines are distinctly different with the front more open in nature with a links feel, while the back is tighter and outlined by mature trees. The Woodlands is a Lindsay Ervin creation that takes golfers on a scenic journey through a world of tall, hardwood trees that guard the lush bentgrass fairways and large, undulating greens. Ervin himself said The Woodlands “truly ranks as my best design.”
Harford County borders Baltimore County to the north and boasts being the state’s most awarded public course. Plenty of diversions other than golf can occupy your time away from the links. Take in a minor league baseball game at Ripken Stadium or try your luck at Hollywood Casino in Perryville. Bulle Rock Golf Club in Havre de Grace is recognized annually as the Free State’s best daily-fee golf course. Its big and bold design comes from none other than Pete Dye. Mountain Branch Golf Club’s challenging layout located in Joppa features dramatic topography and outstanding conditions. Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Rising Sun provides a classic links style round with open fairways, manicured tees and greens, and a country club feel sure to please any golfer.
A trip to the Inner Harbor is definitely within reach of both counties. You can catch a game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards or just visit some of Baltimore’s famous neighborhoods like Fells Point and Little Italy. A trip downtown makes an excellent addition to your golf trip agenda.
